Green reclamation initiative
There are opportunities citywide to infill expanses of pavement with green, greatly improving our public realm at relatively low cost. Small-scale green interventions provide traffic calming, reduce pavement maintenance costs, reduce stormwater flow to city sewers, improve traffic flow at awkward intersections, reduce heat island effect, improve property values, and much more.

Public Art
We need more public art on the streets and in the parks of Providence. Being known as a creative city will only work if our residents, workers and visitors see it and believe it.

Bike Share Program
A bike-share program for Providence would be an alternative to driving and parking cars, fit within a comprehensive transit plan and complement the GreenPrint plan the mayor has proposed.

Car Sharing
It would be great to get a car sharing program here in Providence. I understand that Zipcar has a few cars for use by Brown affiliates, but more widespread availability would be a great resource for Providence.

A really nice outdoor public swimming pool.
Because it's really not rocket science.
Ideally, in the Jewelry District (though I'd settle for India Point Park), with a view of the (real) water.

Design for America: Homes for Health
Design for America: Homes for Health, is a home re-decorating show for families shouldering environmental burdens. In partnership with RISD's Project Open Door, Brown University, the Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island, the Childhood Lead Action Project, and Clear Corps, we will be working with inner-city high-school students for a 6-8 week summer program to do the design and implementation work for a family's home in Providence. Through active making, workshops, field trips, and guest lecturers, students will learn about environmental threats within their own home along with interior design principles for a healthy and beautiful living environment. Threats within… more

More parks will be best
I'd rather have nice open spaces in Providence to attract people. Waterplace was GREAT until the city allowed the condos to be built. The nicest large open space is Roger Williams Park.
There needs to be one downtown

A store that sold only items made from items that were being discarded
This store would sell items that were made from materials that were being thrown away - anyone could bring items to sell on consignment - could employ regular artists on premises - may also have training program for building, painting, etc. to create jobs.

Low cost America's Cup event
Auckland New Zealand hosted the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series this summer. Americas Cup teams raced in 2007 boats - low cost and about sailing skills rather than who can spend the most. $14M economic boost. Would be bigger for Newport and Providence.

Garbage for Food Exchange
A restaurant that serves all local food in exchange for picking up trash off the streets (or other community services). This would clean up the community and give people a healthy affordable food option if they're willing to do some community service. Donations can be accepted to, but the idea would be to get people doing good things for the community. Maybe we can start a garden in some of those trash-littered lots in South Providence and serve fresh veggies from that!
